A graduate of Osgoode Hall Law School and called to the Ontario Bar in 1994, Kara has 24 years’ experience as a lawyer, in both the public and private sectors, specializing in entertainment law and providing legal, business and regulatory advice to senior executives and film and television producers on a broad range of business issues, commercial agreements, and regulatory and compliance matters.
Kara began her career in the entertainment industry at Alliance Communications Inc. in the mid-nineties. She then joined Telefilm Canada as legal counsel and senior investment analyst working in the Toronto feature film unit. Following Telefilm, she worked as an associate at Hall Webber LLP before establishing Kara Russell Law. Most recently, Kara has worked in the Business Law Group at CBC and as Director, Business & Legal Affairs for Frantic Films.
In 2016, Kara was appointed Legal Counsel and Director, Business Affairs of Bristow Global Media, a Toronto-based content creation company specializing in multi-platform content across all genres including scripted, lifestyle, reality, documentary and sports.
Kara has served as Board Member of Women in Film & Television (Toronto Branch) in the Executive Committee and Finance Committee. She is also a member of the Canadian Association of Black Lawyers.
